"GREY skies couldn't stop the fun in Cardenden as the village's annual fair got underway on Sunday....
Wallsgreen Park, Cardenden, KY5 0BW
The Village Fair aims to bring together a wide variety of organisations, agencies, stall and charity holders to raise awareness to the local communities.
Our theme this year is "Volunteering".
We are so lucky to live in a community with so many wonderful groups that support and give opportunities for us to connect and grow.
I will be expanding this area with helpful links over time for our activities, how to join, who to contact.
In the mean time I am extending a warm welcome to Pam Bennett who will be joining us on Sunday. Pam is our local Volunteering Development Officer with Fife Voluntary Action who has recently taken over the Cardenden, Cowdenbeath and Lochgelly area.
“Fife Voluntary Action (FVA) is the third sector interface for the Fife Council area. They ensure the third sector is robust, resilient, and delivers high quality services for the people of Fife. They offer advice on a wide range of volunteering opportunities and help with the practical side of volunteering such as travel expenses and volunteering while on benefits. They have a wide range of volunteering opportunities for hundreds of organisations across Fife, helping you to choose the right role for you.”

We offer classes from complete new starts, through to competative swimming. Our swimming lessons run in line with Scottish Swimming's 'Learn to Swim' programme, to allow an easy transition.
We train at Bowhill Swimming Pool on Monday's and Wednesday's and also have a session at Micheal Woods on a Thursday for our Bronze, Silver and Gold squad swimmers."
Cardenden Community Development Forum and Community Shop
"Cardenden Community Development Forum are happy to see the community shop up and running. This venture was in the Community Action Plan for 2013-2018 and was a plan that soon became very popular and one the community were behind making happen. The aim was to set up a community business, such as a charity shop, which would provide training and raise funds for local projects.
The shop is located at 129A Station Road and welcomes all. The profits made are reinvested into the community and may go towards things such as local football clubs/playgroups/new projects that need a kick-start etc.
The Cardenden Community Development Forum has had support from the Coalfields Regenerations Trust, The Lotto Awards for All and Fife Council to help get the shop off the ground.
The Community Shop will be run by volunteers and depend on donations from the community to keep the shop going from strength to strength.
We are open:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11am - 2.30pm
Wednesday 10am - 1pm
Sunday - Closed
Please get behind The Community Shop.
Thank You!!"

"In conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University and the Scottish Football Museum, OnFife are proud to bring Rutherglen Ladies F.C., The Hidden History of James H. Kelly's Trailblazers to our flagship venues in Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline.
One of the leading lights of Scottish Women's Football was a local lass from Cardenden. May Watson, born in 1906, came from a blended family with 6 siblings under the age of 14. Five more children were to follow before the advent of World War 1 in 1914. Life was hard in an overcrowded Dundonald miner's raw with no space to call your own or room to breathe. It's little wonder that the great outdoors and the proximity to Cardenden's 'Den' held such appeal to local bairns.
By the time May was 15, as well as her full-time job as a farm worker, she was Captain of Auchterderran Ladies' football team. Based in Bowhill, the village could boast to be one of the few Fife villages with a progressive female community who weren't afraid to emulate the men. In the age of suffrage, it appears young women were proudly taking their place in the male dominated arena of sport, in and around the villages of Kirkcaldy. A local historian described the team as “giving a good account of themselves and were presented with football boots and all the necessary gear by admirers! One man told me he remembered a game played at Wallsgreen, Bowhill, with a crack ladies' team from Edinburgh, when the score was 7-0 in Bowhill's favour, May Watson scoring 5 goals.”
May's prowess as a centre-forward and prolific goal scorer soon caught the eye of J.H. Kelly who invited her to join Rutherglen F.C. She soon became an integral part of the team, touring Scotland and Ireland in 1925-26 and playing in the Scottish Ladies' team that defeated Dick Kerr's revered English aside, who at the time were unofficial World champions.
Even after her retirement, she kept up her love of the sport and surprised many a youngster when a football strayed into her path. Her son, Bert, used to regale a tale of his proudest moment, “when a high ball heading towards mum, her eye never left the ball. As she ran, she got underneath it, trapped it dead with one foot, slammed it hard and low, back at these fellows with the other, nearly knocking one of them over with the force of her drive. I nearly had to pick the young men's jaws off the grass as they could not believe what they had seen this old woman do”.
May died at 52 years of age and a fitting tribute described her as probably one of the best lady footballers in Britain, who did much in her football years to raise money for charity and often played against men's teams with outstanding ability.
May's direct descendants, including a great-granddaughter and great-great granddaughter who work for OnFife are delighted that her contribution to the story of Scottish Women's football is being shared and after 100 years her achievements are finally being recognised.”
